Once popular cosmetology school in Cambria County brought back to life by new owners

Johnstown area residents who are interested in cosmetology or barber school won't have to travel too far to get there anymore.

That's because the L&D Academy Multicultural School of Beauty and Barber Science opened right along Bedford Street.

"They won't have to go to Pittsburgh, Altoona, or Huntingdon."

That's what David Jurcic, the Owner and Barber Director, said at their grand opening event on Sunday.

"It's been a long time coming. A lot of work. We renovated," he told 6 News.

It was once the Pennsylvania Academy of Cosmetology, where many students have received their training in the past.

"It's been closed about three years now. We're opening back up as a cosmetology school, but also as a barber school," said Jurcic.

But they're not just adding barber training; they're also focusing on multicultural hair.

"We say multicultural because we want to focus on all types of hair. If you can only do one type of hair, you're limiting yourself," Jurcic told 6 News.

Both full-time and part-time enrollment will be available, hoping to get back to the school's original 'roots.'

"It was a great school at one time. A lot of people came, and that gave the students an opportunity to work on people," he said.

Clients can start coming in to get their hair done in the fall, which will be a 'highlight' of their program.

Full-time hours: Tuesday through Saturday from 8:00am - 3:30pm.

Part-time hours: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday from 5:30pm - 10:30pm & Saturday from 8:00am - 3:30pm.
